3 Ways to Make Real Progress In Your First 30 Days of CrossFit
Thirty days might not sound like much time, but it's enough to start seeing real improvements in your fitness. We've seen it happen countless times at CrossFit Downtown Atlanta.
Whether you're thinking about trying CrossFit for the first time, returning to exercise after a break, or looking to get more out of your current routine, the next month could make a bigger difference than you expect.
But here's something we've learned from coaching people over the years: signing up for a gym membership is only the first step. The members who make meaningful progress are the ones who commit to putting in the work.
Based on what we've seen work, here are our three recommendations for making the most of the next 30 days.
1. Come to Class Five Days a Week
Five days a week might sound like a lot, especially if you haven't exercised regularly in a while. There's a reason we recommend it.
One of the biggest challenges when starting a fitness program isn't the workout itself. It's prioritizing exercise as a regular part of your schedule.
The more often you attend, the more opportunities you'll have to practice movements, improve your technique, and build your fitness. We've seen how motivating those early improvements can be, whether you're learning something new or refining a skill you've practiced for years.
When you're only making it to class occasionally, it's much harder to see progress. And when you aren't seeing progress, it's easy to question whether your efforts are worthwhile.
But coming to class five days a week doesn't mean going all-out five days a week. In fact, you shouldn't. This is even true for experienced CrossFitters.
Some days should be lighter than others. You might reduce the weight, slow your pace, or scale back the intensity. Our coaches will help you make those adjustments based on your current fitness level so you can attend regularly without pushing yourself to exhaustion.
The goal is to establish a solid routine, not to see how exhausted you can make yourself in your first month.
2. Be Coachable and Willing to Learn
You don't need any CrossFit experience to get started, and even athletes who've been training for years have movements and skills they can improve.
Our coaches will teach you how to perform movements, explain why we're doing them, and help you choose an appropriate approach for each workout. Sometimes they'll ask you to use a lighter weight, modify a movement, or slow down. Don't take those corrections personally. They're part of what you're paying us to do.
Focus on moving well before worrying about how much weight you're lifting or how fast you're finishing.
Listen to your coaches, ask questions when something isn't clear, and be willing to try something new, even if you aren't immediately good at it. And don't compare your performance to the person working out next to you. They might have been doing CrossFit for ten years. Your job is to get a little better at what you are doing.
3. Make Small Improvements to Your Nutrition
You don't need to completely overhaul your diet to make progress. Trying to change everything at once can make it harder to maintain those changes.
Instead, choose one or two manageable improvements. Maybe you cut back on sweet treats during the week, include more protein in your meals, or replace some sugary drinks with water. Getting enough protein, in particular, helps your muscles recover and get stronger.
If you'd like more personalized guidance, we also offer one-on-one nutrition coaching to help you develop an approach that works with your goals and lifestyle.
What If You Miss a Day?
Work gets busy. Kids get sick. You sleep through your alarm. Sometimes you're simply tired and want an extra day to recover.
Missing a workout isn't the problem. The trouble starts when one missed day becomes a missed week, and that missed week turns into another. Once you've missed a few classes, coming back can start to feel harder than it should.
Here's our advice: Put away the guilt and get yourself back to class.
You made a decision to improve your health and fitness. Missing a few workouts doesn't change that commitment. Just come in and pick up where you left off.
We're happy to see you, whether it's been two days or two weeks.
How Will You Know You're Making Progress?
Maybe your goal is to lose weight, gain muscle, get stronger, or improve your conditioning. Those are worthwhile goals, but not all progress shows up on the scale or in the amount of weight you're lifting.
You may also notice that climbing stairs doesn't leave you as winded, or that you can squat a little deeper and move with better control. Perhaps you're sleeping better, have more energy during the day, or no longer feel intimidated walking into class. These things count.
At CrossFit Downtown Atlanta, we'll provide the coaching, programming, and support. Your part is to show up, put in the effort, and follow through.
